Dr. Alix Marduel has been a venture capitalist over the past 19 years, investing across the spectrum of life sciences companies from start-ups to growth-stage public companies. She had invested extensively in the US as well as in Europe (Switzerland, France, Sweden, and England).

Prior to joining Asset Management, Dr. Marduel was a managing director at Alta Partners for twelve years. Under her management the Alta Partners life science and information technology venture fund grew to approximately $1.5 billion, aggregating 7 funds. Over the years she has been responsible for investments in 28 companies including Memory Pharmaceutical, Cytos, Renovis, Connectics, Dyax, the Medicine Company, Onyx, EyeTech, Corcept, Biovitrum, CoTherix and Metabolex.

Dr. Marduel was previously a general partner at Sofinnova, a French venture capital fund. She joined Sofinnova at their San Francisco office in 1990. At Sofinnova she invested in approximately 20 companies including Genset, Flamel. Telik, CV Therapeutics, Aviron and Millenium Pharmaceuticals.

Before moving to the US she was an associate medical director in the cardiovascular division of ICI-Pharma (now AstraZeneca) in France and England.

Dr. Marduel earned an MD from the University of Paris and is licensed to practice medicine in Europe and has passed the medical equivalency exams in the US. She completed her residency in Paris and earned postdoctoral fellowships at UCSF and Stanford University in transplantation immunology.

Dr. Marduel has been recognized with the French National Order of Merit as a Chevaliere. She has been actively involved in the development of health care facilities in Togo through her personal philanthropy, www.togodirect.org.
